My Own Logo Design Process

The start is always the hardest part. When I started seven years ago, I found logo design tiring, complicated, and never thought that rejection is a normal thing here in this profession. Although through the years, I had slowly learned that these tedious processes will shape me to the designer I am supposed to become.
Design process is relative. It depends on the designer’s background or preferences. Designers from art schools are generally process oriented, or they tend to follow the basic steps, designing the textbook way. Ouido designers like me usually have a different approach to the design process, and our approach vary according to our background, to how we started as designers.
In my case, I really do not have one standard way of approaching a design process. It depends on the client and the project. Yet my usual design process is divided into three parts: understanding the clients’ needs and niches, sketching, and conceptualization.
Learn and understand the client, the client’s niche.
Typically, it is hard to please clients without knowing what pleases them. As a commercial designer, you should always start the design process with your clients and it should end with them as well.
Understanding your client’s industry is the best way to begin a logo design process. It is a requirement you have to experience as a designer. Knowing the client’s business from root to top, from rudiments to its broader industry functions, help build the foundation of the design process. Normally, you have to focus on their goals (mission and vision), their social stand (advocacies, company beliefs, affiliate organizations) and their history as a business, because logos are virtual representations of these things.
Put your interest to their niche. Understand it deeply and relate it to their goals as a business. Learning all these things will avoid future logo demise and criticisms.
You should then get your clients’ ideas, their wants, suggestions, and needs. It is their prerogative if they wish to be part of the design process; yet as a designer, it’s your responsibility to align their wants (taste, likings, requirements) to the principles of logo design (simplicity, relevance).
Start sketching
Now, it is time to use all the information you have gathered from the initial step. Start putting your own interpretation on a blank paper through sketching. Do not limit yourself in drawing ideas from your mind. Do not use rulers and measuring tools just yet. Just do the freehand drawing, as if you are only playing. Just draw until you get tired of it.
Conceptualization, main design
The main part of conceptualization comes after sketching. Here, you will organize your sketches and come up with solid logo ideas with measurement, contrast, and typeface in mind. This process is not like, and very different from, sketching. In design, conceptualization is the process of putting your initial ideas to actual logo designs or final products. This is the part where you adhere to your client’s needs, and where you combine this adherence with your design knowledge and inclination without crossing the borders of their corporate beliefs and goals. This is therefore, the real job, where you combine your talent with your client’s needs to come up with one final design.
Normally, clients require designers to submit at least three to ten design concepts to choose from. Some companies have these designs for internal company voting, polls, and surveys to have an idea of its efficiency and recall for the people. From here, they will suggest criticisms, revisions, and even make rejections.

Should You Lecture Your Students?

Should You Lecture Your Students?

When you hear the word lecture, what comes to mind? Do you envision an instructor standing in front of the class talking for hours about a subject hoping that they have something interesting to say, or do you picture an instructor who is engaging and has a dynamic presentation? From the instructor’s perspective, the class lecture is a required element of traditional classroom teaching. Within an online classroom, lectures take the form of informational messages, weekly summaries, and announcements. From the students’ perspective, a lecture can be nothing more than endless information that they may or may not process and they may or may not remember. If your goal is to dispense information then a stand and deliver presentation is all that you need. If your goal is to connect with students in a meaningful way and you want to inspire them to learn and connect with information, you need to consider techniques for engaging them with the material you are presenting.

Students have a great deal of information that they are processing at any given time in your class. When they walk into the classroom they do not automatically stop thinking about their day, responsibilities, or any other pressing demands. In addition, they have assignments to consider, course requirements to complete, and learning objectives to meet. When you first begin a lecture students will develop a perception about that presentation and either choose to listen or ignore what you have to say. It is important to begin that lecture with something engaging, whether it is a story, overview, or discussion about how this presentation is relevant to the class and the process of learning. Once you have students’ initial interest, then you must build from that in an interactive manner.

An effective method of creating a lecture that enhances the process of learning is to develop an outline. Start by considering the subject matter you want to work with and then divide those topics into sections that you can address throughout the allotted time. Next, consider learning activities that you can interject throughout the lecture. This may be a class discussion, a question-and-answer session, a presentation by a guest lecturer, a group activity, an individual activity, an assessment, or a presentation delivered by your students. The purpose of including learning activities is to draw students into the process of learning. It helps to connect their experience and knowledge to the subject matter and it further stimulates their interest.

Finally, the most important aspect of delivering a dynamic lecture is to consider how you communicate. You can choose to either talk at students or talk to them and engage their thinking, which will prompt cognitive development and critical analysis skills. You also want to avoid talking up or talking down to students which is another barrier to communication that can disengage students and prevent them from listening. Another important aspect of communication is your tone. If your voice sounds warm and inviting students will feel encouraged to listen and participate. The most important goal of delivering a class lecture is not to establish your authority, but rather to lead your students through the process of learning and encourage them to be active participants.

Is Knowing What You Know Worth Anything Today?

How is Knowing what you know by the way of experience worth anything today, when anyone can read the shorthand version and put it out there as if they own it? Most seekers will undoubtedly never have the real sweat and tears version, the version that spells out with emotion the process dirty hands and all.
The cuts and bruises suffered along the way, the scraped knees of trial and error are the high prices paid for the knowing a story could tell yet don’t translate well enough to matter. Someone completely talking through their (hat) lol can own the end result with a little study so everyone understands them to be an expert.
How is a seeker to know what to look for, when a shortcut artist can just paint a copy, throw some chrome and fast looking wheels hook on it leaving no one the wiser till crunch hard enough at this juncture but the fact that they are backed up and promoted by folks (to them, it sounds good) that lack the knowledge of specifics within a given topic, like its okay if your information is wrong as long as it reads right to them spelling, paragraph and punctuation correct.
Little do the seekers know how much is lost in translation between the experienced and someone who read it some where in a magazine. It is the lost part that will get you every time, the point not driven home, that pivotal subtlety left on the table because it wasn’t sticky or large enough in the sift of information and fell right through, that little golden nugget fell right through, the one that makes everything right and not for naught slipped right through un-noticed.
It can be costly to a seeker for they have no way knowing until it is too late (hell it sounded good) they are missing the return spring on the gas pedal as they gas on! right into I don’t know what happened it wouldn’t stop. I have seen craftsmen work their magic in many instances throughout life, magic born of experience that permeates everything they do as they pull all the pieces together into a highly regarded result which to me is the only version a seeker should be subjected to.
I can understand to a great extent the needs of someone looking to make a buck, to do the best with what they have and if you have nothing then you must get creative one way or the other, hell or high water. What I don’t understand is pretending to know something and selling it like your are the last word when it comes to that something which by the way just happens to be your middle name, how could that be wrong?
I guess this is just the voice in the ego driven part of me that knows better, that part of me that should not be seen and should not be heard. Yes I can go along with blinders on and just get over any opinion I might be harboring about anything that might matter to me and what about this question I’m asking, is knowing what you know worth anything today, should it matter?
